“Ganpati Bappa Morya…
It is that time of the year when the best known and loved of all Hindu God would be welcomed for the annual 10 day celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi. Known as the Lord of beginnings and Remover of obstacles Lord Ganesha is considered to spread prosperity, fortune and success to His devotees. Hindu mythology is filled with stories of his wit, loyalty and wisdom. These along with his unique symbolic form make him popular not just in India but all over the world.
The annual festival always held a special place in Hindu homes but it was Gangadhar Tilak that used Lord Ganesha as a way to bring people together. Popularly known as Lokmanya Tilak meaning “accepted by the people” was acknowledged as the first leader of the Indian Independence Movement. Post the independence movement in 1857, British had banned the meeting of Indians in large numbers. This along with differences in language, caste and cultures had limited the independence movement only to the circle of educated and elite.
Lokmanya Tilak understood Lord Ganesha’s appeal as the “God for everybody” and used His appeal as a way to galvanise grassroot unity towards organizing the “sarvajanik ganeshotsav” celebrations. These celebrations ensured large gatherings allowing the seeds of independence to be sowed across the nation.
It is interesting side fact that Gan means group and symbolically depicts that the world being a group of atoms and different energies which are held in balance by the supreme energy of Lord Ganesha.
As you can imagine with such connections (Notice our name? Notice we are all groups) at Finlok we cannot wait to welcome Lord Ganesha to our midst.
